Tradition is essential to Judaism’s survival because it transmits our body of knowledge, beliefs and values in a way that makes them part of our identity. Our tradition includes many components: Our sacred literature, our holidays, our life cycle events, our rituals and ceremonies, and even our foodways. As far as Jewish Renewal is concerned, the voice of tradition is insistent and compelling. But Renewal is willing to challenge a given tradition when it seems to be out of step with the movement’s value system.
It believes that inclusivity is a key element in successful outreach. It accords non-Jewish members full equality in privileges and responsibilities. Whenever possible it celebrates holidays outdoors at natural sites rather than indoors. Connectedness with nature is an important contributor to spirituality. Further, Renewal fosters activities that link Judaism’s teachings with ecological concerns.
The movement deeply cherishes its traditions; it diligently works to preserve them and to enhance their power. But the movement will encourage responsible questioning and debate. It will also countenance well-conceived experimentation with new approaches. As for gainsayers, Jewish Renewal bears in mind that every venerable tradition was at one time a radical innovation…..
